Tour Highlights

Our new 9-night / 10-day privately-guided ‘history and spa’ tour is based on our Classic Historical itinerary, with the addition of two nights at the Kuriftu Resort & Spa, a new five-star hotel on the shore of Lake Tana. All the most famous historical sites, with the exception of Axum, are included - Bahir Dar, Gondar, Lalibela and Addis Ababa, as well as the spectacular Simyen Mountains, a UNESCO World heritage site of outstanding beauty.

Day 1

Fly overnight from London Heathrow to Addis Ababa.

Day 2

You arrive in Addis Ababa in the morning where you are be met by your guide and transferred to the Panorama Hotel. After lunch, a tour of the city tour is provided. You overnight here with breakfast included.

Day 3 - 4

In the morning you fly to Bahir Dar, a small town on the shore of Lake Tana, and your base for exploring the famous island monasteries and grass-roofed churches, decorated with magnificent wall murals.

Stay at the five-star Kuriftu Resort and Spa for 2 nights, with all meals included, and a wonderful selection of reviving spas treatments and massages.

Day 5

From Bahir Dar your driver and guide will take the scenic route to Gondar, founded in 1636 by Emperor Fasilidas who chose Gondar as his imperial seat. Here you can explore the Imperial Compound, with its enchanting ‘Fasilidas’ castles, still in very good condition.


Your overland journey continues onward to the Simyen Mountains, where you  overnight in a chalet at Simyen Lodge, all meals included.

Day 6

Spend today exploring the beautiful Simyen Mountains, some of the most dramatic scenery in Africa. In the early morning, you will be driven up to Sankaber Camp, which will be your base. The Simyen Mountains National Park is a World Heritage Site and contains great volcanic plugs, formed 40 million years ago, and now shaped into fantastic crags and flat topped mountains. Seek out the endemic Galada or bleeding heart baboon, the Walia ibex and many endemic birds.

Return to Gondar to stay overnight in the Goha Hotel, all meals included.

Day 7

This morning you fly to Lalibela, home of the world famous subterranean churches, built 800 years ago, and still in use today. These rock-hewn churches are regarded as one of the wonders of the world. Stay in Lalibela for two nights at the Jerusalem Guest House, all meals included.

Day 8

The church of Ashetun Mariam can be visited by mule or on foot. Its mountaintop location provides magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. Alternatively, you can visit the cave church of Neakuto Leab, or make the 40 km journey to see the beautiful cave church of Yemrehane Kristos. The choice is yours.

Day 9

Fly back to Addis Ababa and spend the afternoon shopping at the Merkato, Africa's biggest market. The market is known for its marvellous Ethiopian jewellery, exquisite clothing and fabrics – made locally - local music and much more. A farewell dinner will be arranged and you will be entertained with an authentic performance of traditional music and dance from the different regions of Ethiopia. Overnight at Panorama Hotel, breakfast included.

Day 10

You will be transferred to the airport for the late morning flight to London Heathrow and arrive back in London early evening.
